Course Description and Competencies

What to Expect

In this course, you will work through three modules. These modules are broken into smaller lessons. Studying this material will build foundational knowledge of the arts and humanities.

Throughout the course, you will find readings and a variety of interactive elements. These include videos, study resources, and ungraded practice tests to help deepen your understanding of the content. Engaging with these activities can reinforce new learning. It also complements the knowledge you bring to this area of study.

Course Competencies

This course covers the following competencies:

  • The learner analyzes diverse voices, ideas, perspectives, and cultural interactions through the lens of the humanities.
  • The learner analyzes the humanities during the Information Age.
  • The learner analyzes how music shapes and is shaped by diverse cultures and perspectives.

Assessment

You will write three papers to demonstrate your mastery of the competencies in this course. You must achieve a ranking of Competent on each of these performance assessments to pass the course. You may attempt each assessment two times before additional support is necessary. If you require further attempts, please contact your Student Experience Team.

  • Explore how diverse cultures express ideas through the humanities.
  • Analyze the humanities as a lens for the human experience.
  • Examine the humanities as a record of culture and creativity for a given time.
Information Age
  • Explore innovation through media and the arts during the Information Age.
  • Analyze how diverse voices are represented in the humanities during the Information Age.
  • Examine the humanities as a tool for creative expression in communities.
Musical Origins
  • Understand the basic language of music.
  • Examine the cultural origins of musical genres.
  • Examine musical and cultural fusions and exchange from global origins.
  • Analyze ways cultures, communities, and people express themselves through music.
