Course Description and Competencies

What to Expect

You will see that this course is delivered in a module-based learning platform. It incorporates readings, podcasts, videos, and various interactive learning components. These include ungraded module-level quizzes, knowledge checks, and case studies to help deepen your understanding of the content. Engaging with these activities reinforces new learning. It also complements the knowledge you bring to this area of study. 

This course is aligned with the Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution (CLTD) certification from the Association for Supply Chain Management.  

Course Competencies

This course covers the following competencies:

  • The learner describes key elements of distribution, logistics, and transportation management.  
  • The learner identifies laws and regulations within operations and supply chain with respect to transportation, logistics, and distribution.   
  • The learner explains how total cost of ownership (TCO) management affects operations.  
  • The learner describes key elements of distribution and warehouse management.

The assessment provides an opportunity to demonstrate your mastery of the competencies in this course. You may attempt the assessment two times before additional support is necessary. If you require further attempts, please contact your Student Experience Team.

Course Outline

Fundamentals
  • Describe the scope, role, and modes of distribution and logistics.  
  • Describe the scope, role, and modes of freight transportation.  
  • Describe logistics planning, supply chain planning, and network planning.
  • Describe forward, reverse, and sustainability logistics. 
Laws and Regulations
  • Identify requirements, controls, and challenges of cross-border logistics operations.  
  • Identify trade compliance, custom administrations, tariffs, and taxes.  
  • Identify key elements of border control and supply chain management.  
Total Cost of Ownership
  • Explain the relationship between inventory costs, inventory planning, and stock systems.  
  • Explain various components of operational management, including cost and performance, benchmarking logistics, communication systems, and humanitarian logistics.  
  • Explain considerations for outsourcing in operational management. 
Warehousing 
  •  Describe the logistics of warehousing and storage.  
  • Describe the logistics of picking management and yard management.  
  • Describe aspects of warehouse design and warehouse management. 

Technology Requirements

We want you to have the tools to succeed! Since this course includes at least one proctored test, please be sure to have a working microphone, speakers, and an external webcam. Unfortunately, an internal webcam (built into many laptops) is not acceptable. (Note: The external webcam is required only for exams that have proctors. You do not need one for practice tests and other non-proctored assessments.) If you haven't already, be sure to download the Meazure Learning Guardian browser, which you will need for the proctoring system.

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. If you haven't already, download this free software. You may encounter an interactive form that contains fields that you can select or fill in. Review how to fill in a PDF form.

You are allowed to use a hand-held calculator on every assessment. Be sure to follow these calculator requirements.
