Course Description and Competencies

What to Expect

In this course, you will build the foundational technology skills needed to succeed in today's workplace. You will learn about business productivity suites widely used by employers and explore the digital tools that help workplaces stay organized and productive. These tools include documents, spreadsheets, presentations, calendars, and email. Throughout the course, you will read articles, watch videos, and check your understanding with knowledge checks.

Using free Microsoft online tools, you will complete guided practice activities that walk you through each new skill step by step. This hands-on approach will help reinforce your learning and build your confidence as you practice in real time. At the end of the course, you will learn how to add your new skills to your résumé and talk about them clearly and professionally in interviews.

Course Outline

Technology and Professionalism
  • Identify common workplace technology tools and devices used in digital work environments.
  • Describe the difference between local files and cloud-based files, and local and web-based applications.
  • Demonstrate basic file management skills, including saving, renaming, organizing, and locating files.
Documents
  • Create and save a basic professional document using a word processing application.
  • Apply text formatting techniques, including font styles, headings, and lists.
  • Edit document content using common tools such as copy, paste, spell check, and find.
Professional Communication
  • Create professional email messages.
  • Organize email messages using basic inbox management tools.
  • Create, modify, and respond to calendar events and meeting invitations.
  • Navigate the basic interface of an online meeting platform.
Additional Workplace Tech Tools
  • Navigate a spreadsheet interface, including worksheets, cells, rows, and columns.
  • Enter, edit, and format structured data within a spreadsheet.
  • Apply a basic SUM formula within a spreadsheet to calculate totals.
  • Create and organize a basic presentation using slide layouts and themes.
  • Apply basic text and visual formatting techniques to improve slide clarity and readability.
  • Articulate newly developed digital skills for use in résumés and interviews.
  • Identify next steps for continued development in workplace technology skills.
